Police on Thursday identified the suspect they say carjacked an SUV from a Chevy Chase driveway two days before getting in a police chase in D.C.
Police said David Joel Sutton, 18, of the 1700 block of Montana Avenue NE in D.C., has been charged with armed carjacking, carjacking, first degree assault, armed robbery, the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent felony and the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
Police said Sutton was one of the people inside the SUV, a black 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when a U.S. Park Police officer noticed it at about 3:05 a.m. on Saturday in D.C. A chase followed in which Park Police said gunfire was exchanged between an occupant in the SUV and the officer.
Three people inside the SUV were wounded by gunfire and suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to U.S. Park Police, who also said they recovered a handgun inside.
Sutton is being held in D.C. Montgomery County Police have obtained an arrest warrant.
Police said that at about 10:19 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, Sutton walked up to the SUV in the driveway of a home in the 100 block of East Melrose Street in Chevy Chase. A woman was in the passenger seat of the vehicle when Sutton opened the driver side door and pointed a gun at her, police said.
The woman ran inside the house and Sutton drove off with the SUV, according to police.
