DERWOOD, MD. -- Montgomery County leaders celebrated the opening of a new animal services and adoption center in Derwood on Saturday, a 49,000-square foot facility that houses dogs, rabbits, snakes, and other pets.

"Every animal matters, no matter who or what, or how they come to us," says center director Mary Healey. "We want the best outcome for them."

Healey was joined by County Executive Isiah Leggett, council members Craig Rice, Philip Andrews and Nancy Navarro, and local residents who got a tour of the facility.

It will house the police department's Animal Services Division, and will also serve as a public adoption center and community education resource for animal care issues. The facility has a classroom, on-site veterinary clinic, walking trail and food storage building.
