Man hit by school bus was Holocaust survivor

WASHINGTON – A 91-year-old man who died after he was hit by a school bus in Silver Spring was a Holocaust survivor.

NBC 4 reports that the family of Elia Miranski, of Silver Spring, said that he had survived the Holocaust but declined to comment further.

According to an oral history he provided to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Miranski grew up in Poland and escaped from a Jewish ghetto that had been set up after the German invasion.

After the war he lived in Belarus and Israel before moving to the United States.

Montgomery County police continue to investigate the crash. Police say Miranski walked cross Columbia Pike at Tech Road in the cross walk. He had safely crossed the southbound lanes and had started to cross the northbound lanes when he was hit.

The Howard County school bus was traveling north on Columbia Pike and had a green light at the time of the crash, police say.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call police at 240-773- 6620 or 301-279-8000.
