WASHINGTON -- Traffic was blocked for hours on northbound Route 29 Wednesday after a 91-year-old man was killed when hit by a school bus carrying students.
Elia Miranski, 91, of Silver Spring, had crossed the southbound lanes of Columbia Pike at the crosswalk, using his walker, when he was struck by the bus.
The wreck south of Randolph Road in Silver Spring occurred around 2:30 p.m., police say. None of the 14 Hammond Middle School students were injured.
The Howard County middle school released a statement on Wednesday saying the students were returning from a White House field trip when the collision occurred. A public schools crisis team contacted parents and met with students when they returned.
The statement also offered tips for parents in dealing and talking with their kids, and behavioral signs that could indicate a child is having a hard time coping with the incident.
Miranski was on a walker, which was left in pieces roadside after the incident.
The accident remains under investigation, which includes a look at the traffic signal sequences at the intersection.
