UPDATE 3:35 p.m. A car crashed into the back of the Bethesda Farm Women’s Cooperative Market on Wednesday afternoon, causing visible structural damage.

The incident, in which witnesses say a longtime customer accidentally drove into the building, happened at about 2:40 p.m. in the narrow parking lot behind the Market building (7155 Wisconsin Ave.). No one was injured.

The collision knocked in a window frame and left significant damage. A bystander who was inside the market at the time said it sounded “like a bomb went off.”

Carol Carrier, who has run a flower stand inside the market for more than 35 years, said a number of her vases and flowers came crashing down when the car came crashing in.

“It was a big bang and you look over and it was like, ‘Oh, there’s a car in the building,’” Carrier said. “It was one of our regular customers. She’s actually very nice. I’m sure she did not intend to do this.”

The indoor portion of the market is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Authorities are waiting to tow the car away until an engineer can determine the extent of the structural damage.

On Oct. 25, an elderly woman accidentally drove through the front of a storefront on Bethesda Avenue. No one was seriously injured in that incident.
