Bethesda Area Community Service Week Events

As part of Montgomery County’s annual Community Service Day, at least seven organizations are holding volunteer events the week of Oct. 22 to Oct. 28.

The Bethesda area projects include cleaning up and “putting away” parts of the baseball park at Shirley Povich Field, a painting project at the headquarters of a healthcare nonprofit and invasive weed removal at McCrillis Gardens.

Many of the projects are still looking for volunteers and county officials in charge of the event are encouraging residents to create their own.

The Shirley Povich Field project includes taking down signs, gardening and helping staff of the Bethesda Community Baseball Club that runs the summer league Big Train baseball team prepare the park for winter.

The rest of the projects, including links and descriptions are after the jump:

LWVMC Voters’ Guides distribution

The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County will be distributing our non-partisan General Election Voters’ Guide at selected County Metro stations each day throughout Community Service week, October 22-28 during the evening rush-hours and mid-day on Saturday and Sunday.  Our Voters’ Guide provides candidates’ responses to several questions of interest for national, judicial and local offices, as well as a description and pro-con discussion for the seven statewide ballot questions and the two or three local questions that will appear on Montgomery County ballots

Painting Project, Mobile Medical Care, Inc.

We are undergoing some minor building renovations and want to keep our offices looking professional and inviting for community members who walk through our doors. We need volunteers to do some painting at our headquarters (and moving boxes and furniture around so that the painting can be done).  This is a great project for a small group!   We have the painting supplies.

Invasive removal at McCrillis Gardens

Volunteers will work with staff to remove invasive non-native plants in the natural areas of Brookside Gardens’ satellite shade garden location in Bethesda: McCrillis Gardens. Work will be physical in nature and volunteers should come prepared with long sleeve shirt, pants, old shoes (no sandals), a hat, bug spray, gloves and sunscreen. Volunteers can bring their own labelled pruners, and hand shovels.

Suburban Nursery School

We need your help! Come join us run a fun-fillled event to support Suburban Nursery School, a 50-year-old non-profit, cooperative preschool and its creative programming for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds. Our Truck Touch event is held Saturday, October 27th from 10am-3pm at our preschool located in Bethesda. We are looking for help from9 am- 4 pm., though students can volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours to a maximum of 7 hours anytime during that time period.

Suburban Nursery School has assembled a ton of trucks for kids (and adults) to explore and touch (fire trucks, rescue boats and trucks, snowplow, hummer, mail trucks…). Volunteers are needed to help sell balloons, food, tickets, assist with manning our craft table and/or work in setting up and cleaning up the event. You will be working hand-in-hand with our preschool parents, so there will be plenty of support and people to help if you have questions about your role.

Hillmead Park Invasive Weed removal

Sponsored by  Friends of Cabin John Creek.  Hillmead residents will hold an invasive plant workday Sunday, Oct. 28, from 10a – 2pm, doing a mop-up of previous areas cleared, and pushing into new sections of the park.  This is a long-term project approved by Montgomery Parks to save the wooded areas in Hillmead Park from being overrun by exotic shrubs and vines.  Participants should wear long pants and sleeves, bring work gloves and hats, and clipping/sawing tools.

Spend time with Seniors at Fall Festival

Volunteers are need to accompany residents around the Bethesda Health and Rehab Fall Festival.  Outdoor activities include pony rides, belly dancers, and visiting local vendors.  Indoor activies include reading to seniors and playing Bingo.

Volunteers are also need to help set up and breakdown the festival.  The festival is from 11-3 but volunteers are needed from 10-4:30.
