A popular Montgomery County food truck had designs on setting up shop in a vacant plot of land in downtown Bethesda.
But Jon Rossler’s plans of bringing his Corned Beef King truck to the shuttered BP gas station at 7725 Old Georgetown Rd. now appear dead.
On Thursday, construction crews began digging up the site, which has been fenced off. An inspector from the Maryland Department of the Environment said BP wanted to get rid of all dirty soil underneath the former gas station before work begins there on a planned luxury condo. The gas tanks have already been removed.
The work seems to have caught Rossler by surprise. When reached yesterday, an employee said the truck would not be coming to the site. Rossler didn’t return a message.
Last week, Rossler tweeted the truck wouldn’t be coming to the spot yet because of “a permitting setback.”
As reported in Bethesda Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine, Rossler’s plan was to have the truck stationed at the location starting on July 30.
Starr Capital, the developer of the luxury condo, is still going through the county’s approval process. At the earliest, groundbreaking on the project would come in late 2014.
Jay Hellman, the previous owner of the site, talked about it as a potential area for food trucks to enliven the area during lunchtime. The Green Eggs and Burgers food stand, which started on Rugby Avenue in October, planned to move to the space but never did.
