Postal Service Announces Contract Post Office On Cordell Avenue

News ExpressThe United States Postal Service on Friday announced a new Contract Postal Unit for a Woodmont Triangle convenience store, though the store has been offering postal services since it opened last year.

The News Express (4853 Cordell Ave.) opened on the first floor of the Triangle Towers apartments last fall after moving from its previous location at 7700 Old Georgetown Rd. The postage stamps, Express Mail service, Priority Mail service and packaging products came with it.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The Postal Service is looking for a new space for a retail post office (which the agency would manage itself) somewhere in Bethesda.

Last year, the USPS closed down two post offices in downtown Bethesda and put a new one in a controversial location near Bradley Boulevard.

It’s encountered plenty of criticism from residents and Rep. Chris Van Hollen’s office. Van Hollen called on the USPS to relocate its new location at 6900 Wisconsin Ave. because of a lack of convenient parking.

The announcement of the Contract Postal Unit, even though it’s been operating for some time, appears to be a way to provide more service.
