Ike Leggett announces run for re-election

WASHINGTON – Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett announced online Tuesday night that he is running for re-election.

“Our County has made significant progress despite severe economic challenges. But we must continue the momentum and move forward together. This is why I am asking you to join me in my campaign for reelection as County Executive,” says a message on Leggett’s website.

Leggett, a Democrat and Montgomery County’s first African American county executive, has long been expected to announce he’s running for a third term and is seen as the man to beat in the race.

County Councilmember Phil Andrews, who has clashed with Leggett over instituting ambulance fees, has declared he’s running.

Former County Executive Doug Duncan, who served from 1994 to 2006, also said he’s running for the top job.

Leggett has a long record of public service in the county, where he served on the council.
