Montgomery Co. Council demands updates on troubled transit hub

WASHINGTON – The Montgomery County Council wants regular updates on what it will take to fix the troubled Silver Spring Transit Center.

The project, which was supposed to help tie buses to rail connections and provide a hub for commuters on bikes and on foot, was stalled after a report last month showed structural problems posed a safety hazard

Contractors say they did their jobs and followed the design, while the director of general services for the county says his crew also did their jobs.

Currently, the project is two years overdue and $80 million over budget.

Attorneys for Montgomery County say the public shouldn’t have to pay to fix the flaws in the $124 million project.

While County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett’s office will provide the first council briefing April 20, the briefings will not address who’s responsible for the delays or repairs.
