Guatemala arrests soccer radio host in killing

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan police have arrested a radio host who leads a soccer’s team’s fan club on charges he incited fellow fans to kill a supporter of a rival team.

Marlo Puente Rimola and two other men were arrested Tuesday for the April 27 beating and stabbing death of Kevin Diaz, a 17-year-old fan of the Comunicaciones team who had been heading to a game with his girlfriend.

Puente Rimola had a longstanding local radio show covering events related to Club Municipal and was head of its fan club. He has sometimes feuded with local sports and business figures.

As he was being arrested, Puente denied any role in participating in or inciting the killing, noting that he did not appear in videos of the mob that killed Diaz.

Following the slaying, both teams were ordered to play matches in front of empty stadiums.
