FIFA lifts Cameroon suspension from world soccer

Monday - 7/22/2013, 2:18pm  ET

ZURICH (AP) -- FIFA has lifted Cameroon's suspension from international soccer, allowing the African country to play a key World Cup qualifier against Libya.

FIFA imposed the ban July 4, citing government interference at the Cameroon Football Association following disputed elections last month.

FIFA says it lifted the sanction after an emergency management committee was "able to take up its duties" Monday at the federation's offices. A resolution was expected after FIFA President Sepp Blatter hosted a Cameroon delegation last week.

Cameroon is home against Libya on Sept. 6. Cameroon leads the group by one point, with the winner advancing to a final playoff round.

The sanction still forced the postponement of Saturday's African Champions League group match between the club teams Coton Sport of Cameroon and Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast.
