Obama congratulates Spurs, Kings on championships

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is offering his congratulations to the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Kings for their championship victories this year.

Obama called Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich on Friday to commend the team’s NBA Finals victory. The White House says Obama praised the team’s focus, determination and teamwork that helped the team set a record score. Obama told Popovich he’s one of the finest U.S. coaches and a role model for young men.

Obama also called Kings captain Dustin Brown following the team’s Stanley Cup win. The White House says Obama applauded the perseverance that enabled the team to pull off a comeback. He also praised Brown’s performance in the Winter Olympics.

Both teams will be invited to the White House for a ceremony marking their victories.
