Senators coach Paul MacLean gets 3-year extension

Thursday - 7/4/2013, 1:40pm  ET

OTTAWA (AP) -- Paul MacLean, the NHL's coach of the year, has signed a three-year extension with the Ottawa Senators.

MacLean won the Jack Adams Award this past season as the league's top coach after leading the injury-riddled Senators to a 25-17-6 record after the NHL lockout.

Ottawa reached the playoffs despite missing star forward Jason Spezza and Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson for most of the season.

The Senators eliminated the favored Montreal Canadiens in five games in the first round of the postseason before losing to Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

In two years with the Senators, MacLean is 66-48-16 in 130 regular-season games.

Before joining Ottawa, MacLean spent six seasons as an assistant coach to Mike Babcock with the Detroit Red Wings.
