Caps pick Czech Republic winger for 1st round NHL draft pick

WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals selected Czech Republic winger Jakub Vrana for their first pick Friday night during the National Hockey League Draft at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Caps had the No. 13 pick in the first round.

According to the report, it marked the seventh straight year the Caps chose a European player for their first pick. Vrana, 18, has played the last two seasons in Sweden for Linkoping, and led the Czech Republic’s World Junior Championship under- 18 team with eight goals in 10 games.
