A’s activate closer Sean Doolittle from DL

SEATTLE (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have activated closer Sean Doolittle from the 15-day disabled list ahead of a key three-game series against Seattle.

Doolittle was reinstated before Friday night’s series opener against the Mariners. Oakland’s lead for the top AL wild card spot was down to 1½ games.

Doolittle was placed on the DL on Aug. 24 because of a strained right intercostal muscle. Since taking over as closer, Doolittle has 20 saves in 23 chances. He has a 2.28 ERA in 54 total appearances and currently is on a 13-inning scoreless streak. Doolittle has struck out 80 and walked only five this season.

Since Doolittle went on the DL, the A’s have just one save, by Eric O’Flaherty. Oakland was 5-12 while Doolittle was on the DL.
