SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro has been activated from the disabled list and will make his first start of the season on Saturday.

The 38-year-old infielder, who played a pivotal role in San Francisco’s march toward the 2012 World Series championship, has not played this season because of a lower back strain.

He rejoined the team prior to Friday night’s game against Arizona. Scutaro took batting practice with his teammates and sat in on a hitter’s meeting before being activated to San Francisco’s 25-man roster.

The Giants have dropped 21 of their previous 29 games and have hit the fewest home runs in the majors since June 8.

To make room for Scutaro, second baseman Brandon Hicks was designated for assignment.
