WASHINGTON -- Friday is the 75th anniversary of the day that 36-year-old Lou Gehrig, suffering from the disease that killed him less than two years later and which today bears his name, took the microphone at Yankee Stadium in uniform and delivered his retirement speech.
The best-known line, of course, is: "For the past two weeks, you have been reading about the bad break that I got. Yet today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
But the rest of the speech deserves to be remembered, and now it has been: Major League Baseball has made a video of all 30 current big-league first basemen (plus Yankee star Derek Jeter) reciting the speech.
