NEW YORK (AP) -- The Los Angeles Angels have recalled infielder Andrew Romine from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill in for ailing shortstop Erick Aybar.
Romine was in the starting lineup Wednesday night, batting eighth against the New York Yankees. Aybar, a Gold Glove winner in 2011, left Tuesday night's loss with cramping in his left calf. He had started 80 straight games at shortstop.
Manager Mike Scioscia says Aybar is feeling much better and should be available off the bench. He hopes to start Thursday afternoon.
Romine made the big club out of spring training and went 3 for 23 (.130) in 16 games before he was demoted to the minors May 3. His brother is Yankees backup catcher Austin Romine, who was not in the lineup Wednesday.
To make room on the roster, the Angels optioned left-handed reliever Nick Maronde to Double-A Arkansas.
