SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- First baseman Angel Villalona, a former top prospect with the San Francisco Giants before being cleared of a murder charge in his native Dominican Republic, has been promoted to Double-A Richmond from Class-A San Jose.
Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans said Sunday night Villalona would join Richmond on Monday.
A California League All-Star this season, the slugging first baseman was batting .229 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs while also playing solid defense in 73 games for San Jose.
Villalona was charged in the September 2009 death of a 25-year-old man after a bar fight in his native La Romana, Dominican Republic. He was freed on bond that November after the victim's family asked a judge to drop the case. He didn't return to the U.S. until this spring training.
