ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Joel Hanrahan had ligament replacement surgery Thursday on his right elbow.
Hanrahan also had his right flexor tendon repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.
Obtained from Pittsburgh in an offseason trade, the two-time All-Star is making $7.04 million this year and is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and converted four of six save chances in nine games.
Andrew Bailey, sidelined by a right biceps strain, threw 15-pitches in a simulated game Thursday. He will make a minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday and could be activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday. Red Sox manager John Farrell said Bailey will be the closer once he rejoins the team.
