SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Tiger Woods made it look easy in the rain today on the North Course at Torrey Pines and finished his day atop the leaderboard in the Farmers Insurance Open. Woods put himself into great position going into the weekend with a 7-under 65 with several players still on the course finishing their rounds.

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it's possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez could miss the entire season while recovering from hip surgery. The 37-year-old Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip last week.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Infielder Joaquin Arias (wah-KEEN' AYR'-ee-ahs) has agreed to a $925,000, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants to avoid salary arbitration. The deal reached today leaves reliever Sergio Romo as the only Giants arbitration-eligible player left to sign with the World Series champions.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- San Francisco kicker David Akers calls his struggles this season a "head scratcher" and says if the 49ers win the Super Bowl it will erase all of his 14 misses this season. Akers missed an NFL-worst 13 field goals this season and then hit the upright on a 38-yarder in last week's NFC championship game at Atlanta.

HONOLULU (AP) -- Houston running back Arian Foster says players are going to step up at the Pro Bowl this year, but don't expect 100 percent effort. Foster said after practicing with his AFC teammates that it's unrealistic to expect full effort from the NFL's top athletes in what essentially is an exhibition contest.
