A distraction for the Niners?...Aggies extend Sumlin's deal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The agent for Michael Crabtree says the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver has voluntarily met with police in their investigation into an alleged sexual assault in a hotel after the team's playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers last weekend. The Niners are in Atlanta this weekend to play the Falcons in Sunday's NFC championship with the winner going to the Super Bowl.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Texas A&M has agreed in principle to give coach Kevin Sumlin a contract extension and a raise after he led the Aggies to 11 wins in his first season with the team. With Heisman-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL') at the helm, the Aggies finished 11-2 and finished No. 5 in the AP rankings, their highest final ranking since 1956.

UNDATED (AP)-- Following a four-month labor lockout, the NHL season gets under way today. There are 13 games on the opening day schedule with the L.A. Kings playing Chicago in one of three afternoon games on the slate.

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baseball is mourning the death of Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver, who won 1,480 games and one World Series at the helm of the Baltimore Orioles. Weavers marketing agent says the 82-year-old Weaver died while on a Caribbean cruise sponsored by the Orioles.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Men's top seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak YOH'-koh-vihch) and No. 2 women's seed Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH'-vah) are among those in action tonight as they wrap up the first week of the two-week Australian Open. Second seed Roger Federer advanced into the fourth round Friday night.
