Nets fire coach...Sanchez returns to QB Jets...Marlins giving Maine a shot

Thursday - 12/27/2012, 6:50pm  ET

NEW YORK (AP) -- Last night's loss to Milwaukee -- Brooklyn's 10th in 13 games -- was apparently the tipping point for team management. The Nets fired coach Avery Johnson today. According to someone familiar with the plan, assistant P.J. Carlesimo (kar-LIHS'-ih-moh) will coach the team Friday against visiting Charlotte.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Less than two weeks after being benched, Mark Sanchez will be the Jets' starting quarterback for Sunday's season finale. His replacement for last week's game, Greg McElroy, revealed today that he has a concussion.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- A shoulder injury that kept Matt Barkley from playing in Southern California's last game will keep the senior quarterback from playing against Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl, as well. Redshirt freshman Max Wittek will get his second career start.

MIAMI (AP) -- The Miami Marlins have signed pitcher John Maine to a minor league contract and will give him an opportunity to compete for the fifth spot in their rotation when spring training rolls around. The 31-year-old right-hander played in the big leagues from 2004 to 2010 with the Orioles and Mets.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- It's only an exhibition tournament, but Andy Murray's new season got off to a rough start today in Abu Dhabi. The U.S. Open champion and Olympic gold medal winner got beat by Janko Tipsarevic (YAHN'-koh tihp-SAYR'-oh-vihch) 6-3, 6-4 in the opening match of the World Tennis Championship.
