IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Police in the Dallas suburb of Irving say Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown was killed early this morning when a speeding car driven by defensive lineman Josh Brent hit a curb and flipped at least once. Brent is facing an intoxication manslaughter charge.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Michael Young waived his no-trade clause today and the Texas Rangers are shipping the seven-time All-Star infielder to Philadelphia for a pair of relievers. Young had a down year in 2012, batting .270 with eight homers and 67 RBIs.
MIAMI (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez says he'll have surgery on his left hip in mid-January, which is pretty much what the Yankees hinted at when they said earlier this week that the 14-time All-Star would need time to prepare for the operation. A-Rod had surgery on his right hip in 2009 and missed about the first month of the season, but this operation is more complicated and he could be on the shelf until after the All-Star game.
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Tommy Tuberville resigned as Texas Tech's football coach today and accepted the same job at Cincinnati, a day after Butch Jones left the Bearcats for Tennessee. The 58-year-old Tuberville went 20-17 in three seasons with the Red Raiders after stints at Ole Miss and Auburn.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- South Florida has tapped Tampa-area native Willie Taggert to run its football program. The 36-year-old spent the past three seasons at Western Kentucky.
