NEW YORK (AP) -- A frustrated NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says he is out of ideas how to get negotiations back on track to save the hockey season. Talks fell apart on last night amid back-and-forth accusations, and the fallout was still being felt today with the two sides having no contact with each other on the 83rd day of the owners' lockout of players.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The University of Tennessee is turning its football fortunes over to Butch Jones, who was hired away from Cincinnati to take over a program that went 15-21 during Derek Dooley's three-year stay. Jones is the Vols' fourth coach in six years.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves will again have the services of the best pinch-hitter in the National League for the 2013 baseball season. Reed Johnson, who was 18 for 43 as a pinch-hitter and hit .290 overall, has signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Baseball's average salary increased 3.8 percent this year to a record $3.2 million. According to final figures released by the Major League Baseball Players Association, the rise is the steepest since 2007.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)-- Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, the top two scorers in the NBA, collide tonight in Oklahoma City where the 15-4 Thunder take on the struggling 9-10 L.A. Lakers. The Thunder will be aiming for their seventh straight victory.
