WASHINGTON - Nationals pitcher John Lannan says he has requested a trade after being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

In an email sent Wednesday to six reporters with the subject line "Thoughts on announcement of being optioned," Lannan says he told general manager Mike Rizzo "a trade would be the best solution for everyone in both the short and long term."

Lannan says he thinks he belongs in a major league rotation. He also says he's done a lot for the Nationals "through some tough times" and figured he would be "part of the team's next exciting chapter."

Last season, the left-hander went 10-13 with a 3.70 ERA over 184 2-3 innings across 33 starts. He was Washington's opening-day starter in 2009 and 2010.
