13 injured in multi-car crash in Maryland, roads closed

WASHINGTON — Thirteen people were injured in a 4-vehicle crash in Sandy Spring, Maryland, on Friday.

Seven people were transported to a hospital, five children and two adults. Two of the children, ages 6 and 11, were helicoptered from the scene with serious but non- life-threatening injuries, according to Pete Piringer, with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

The wreck on Norwood Road involved a minivan, an SUV and two cars, Piringer says.

It’s unclear what caused the crash.

Norwood Road was shut down for several hours after the incident. It was reopened shortly before 5 p.m.

None of the victims’ injuries were life-threatening, Piringer says. In a tweet Friday afternoon, Piringer gave partial credit to child-safety seats.
