Md. man to be sentenced in honor student’s killing

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A Prince George’s County man convicted of killing a high school honor student on his walk to school is set to learn his fate Friday.

Twenty-one-year-old Travon Donnell Bennett is set to be sentenced in Prince George’s County Circuit Court. A jury found him guilty of second- degree murder and armed robbery in August. The jury found him not guilty of first-degree murder.

Bennett faces life in prison.

Eighteen-year-old Marckel Ross was killed on Sept. 11, 2012, while walking to Central High School in Capitol Heights. The 11th-grader was a track athlete at the school.

Defense attorneys had argued at Bennett’s trial that Ross’ death was not planned.
