Police: Bank robber tried to use cab as getaway car

Cary James, via Montgomery County Police Montgomery County Police say a man who robbed a Rockville bank on Thursday left the scene with a ride from an unsuspecting taxicab driver.

Police said Cary James, 44, of Orlando, Fla., took a taxi to the Wells Fargo Bank in the Congressional Plaza Shopping Center. James then entered the bank, passed a note to the teller demanding money and then walked back to the taxi with an unspecified amount of cash, police said.

Police said the taxi driver was unaware of James’ activity and began driving him toward Washington, D.C.

The bank employees contacted police, who put out a lookout for James.

At about 3:45 p.m., police found and stopped the taxi along Old Georgetown Road near I-270. James was arrested without incident and found with items bank employees said were used in the robbery, police said. Police said they also found the stolen cash from the bank.

Police later identified James as a suspect in two robberies earlier in the week in Falls Church and Arlington. Investigators from those jurisdictions and the FBI came to Montgomery County Police Headquarters to interview James.
