Md. officer convicted in assault involving 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Maryland Transportation Authority police officer has been convicted in the off-duty assault of a man who was beaten in the head with a gun.

A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge convicted 41-year-old Derwin Waldron on assault charges Wednesday.

Waldron faces a minimum five-year prison sentence at sentencing Dec. 8.

Waldron’s attorney didn’t return a message seeking comment Friday.

On March 31, 2012, prosecutors say Waldron was in a car driven by his daughter when three men walked by and one briefly sat on the hood. Shortly after, the men say Waldron came up behind them and beat one of them with a gun, causing serious injuries. Waldron’s also accused of pointing the gun at the other two men.

Transportation Authority Police said Friday that Waldron resigned after being convicted.
