Md. man gets 50 years in near-fatal shooting

BALTIMORE (AP) — An Anne Arundel County man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison in the near-fatal shooting of a man who spent four months in a coma, was hospitalized for a year and underwent 21 surgeries.

Prosecutors say 25-year-old Kelly Gross of Severn was sentenced Tuesday in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Gross’ attorney, David Mabrey, said Wednesday he was disappointed in the length of the sentence and hoped his client would be given some opportunity to rehabilitate himself.

Prosecutors say in May 2012, Gross got in a car in Baltimore, pulled a gun and said he was robbing the driver and his passenger. When Gross realized the victims didn’t have any money or valuables, prosecutors say he opened fire, shooting the driver repeatedly in the torso and limbs.
