Hagerstown-Orlando route goes on temporary hiatus

Tuesday - 8/12/2014, 9:15am  ET

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air is temporarily suspending its passenger route from Hagerstown Regional Airport to Orlando as vacation season winds down.

The twice-weekly service will resume Oct. 31.

The Herald- Mail in Hagerstown reports (http://bit.ly/1pM9MCx ) that the seasonal shutdown is an annual occurrence with Allegiant. An airline spokesman says the hiatus is an important part of its low-fare model, ensuring that planes fly only when full of passengers.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant serves about 7 million passengers a year, with most routes connecting small airports to vacation destinations like Orlando and Las Vegas.
