Md. Horse Council seeks hearing on Sunday hunting

Tuesday - 8/12/2014, 7:05am  ET

HAGERTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Horse Council is objecting to the way in which the Department of Natural Resources is trying to expand Sunday hunting opportunities in western Maryland.

The equine group is seeking a hearing before a joint committee of the General Assembly on whether the DNR properly added Sunday hunting opportunities this fall for white-tailed deer, other mammals and some game birds as an "emergency" provision, without a 30-day window for public comment.

Gov. Martin O'Malley signed two bills in May authorizing the DNR to allow more Sunday hunting in Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties. The equine group and the Maryland Ornithological Society opposed the bills in the 2014 General Assembly.

DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said Monday that the regulations were properly implemented.
