How does D.C.'s Metro system stack up?

WASHINGTON -- With the Silver Line opening recently, Metro has added another train to an already vast public transportation system in the D.C. area.

But how does the region compare with other major systems?

According to Web site FiveThirtyEight, the D.C. area ranks third in monthly ridership, according to data reported to the site from the National Transit Database.

The D.C. area averaged 99.6 trips per capita, the data show. The San Francisco- Oakland area averaged 131.5 trips per capita, and the New York-Newark area topped the list with 229.8 trips.

Baltimore came in 18th with 47.4 trips per capita, according to the list. Waldorf, Maryland was ranked 204th (6.7 trips); Frederick, Maryland is 215th (6.1 trips).
