Beltway wreck gives ICC boost

WASHINGTON – Use of the Intercounty Connector was up Thursday as drivers sought refuge from miles-long Beltway delays.

The Maryland Transit Administration says toll gantries logged about 8,000 more trips than a typical day. The average number of trips is about 48,000 for a typical Thursday across the toll road.

The truck wreck on the Inner Loop of the Beltway occurred around 10 a.m. and didn’t clear until 9 p.m. Although several Beltway lanes reopened mid-afternoon, the backups on I-495 lasted nearly 11 hours until 9:30 p.m. when delays finally dissipated.

Drivers used Interstate 270 to reach the connector road, which would take them to Interstate 95 or beyond.

The section of the ICC parallel to the closed portion of the Beltway saw the most significant increase in users. Between Briggs Chaney Road and I-95, the MDTA says 46,521 trips were logged yesterday, compared with last Thursday’s 36,986 trips.
