Woman pinned under bus in Upper Marlboro dies

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – A woman was killed in Prince George’s County on Thursday morning after being struck by a county bus and dragged down the street.

The woman was hit around 10:30 a.m. while she was crossing Main Street, just down the block from the County District Courthouse. Witnesses say she was in the crosswalk when a county bus called made a left turn on a green light and drove into her path.

The driver told police that she did not see the woman before hitting her.

“The lady fell, went under the bus, and was dragged approximately 20 feet,” says Upper Marlboro Chief of Police Michael Gonnella.

She was pronounced dead on the scene.

There are no crossing signals at this intersection, however, witnesses say the victim was walking with the green light. “Maryland law is very clear that if you have a green light and you are in the crosswalk, you have the right of way,” Gonnella says.

Charges have not been filed.

Gonnella says this intersection is safe and pedestrian accidents are rare, “We’ve only had two in 10 years that I’m aware of. Both with people crossing the street with the light, actually. This one — the fatality — and one where a person was slightly injured.”

Main Street was closed for several hours during the investigation.
