Relatives, friends remember boy killed at camp

BALTIMORE (AP) — The mother of a 12-year-old boy who died after a tree fell on him during a storm at a Christian summer camp calls him “a light to everyone who knew him.”

Antoinette Bens released a statement Tuesday as relatives and friends gathered at New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore for the funeral of her son, Justin Diggs.

In her statement, Bens also thanked the community for its support after her son’s death.

Justin died on July 8 at the River Valley Ranch summer camp in Manchester when a storm downed several trees on a path where more than 100 campers were walking. Several other children were injured.

Relatives say Justin loved to swim, play sports and spend time with friends.
