BALTIMORE (AP) — Officials in Baltimore say a new parking program is aimed at increasing the parking options for people with disabilities and combating the abuse of disability placards.
City officials said Wednesday that approximately 200 on-street parking spaces have been reserved for vehicles that display a disability placard or tags. Meters have also been retrofitted to be more accessible for people with disabilities.
The city says as a part of its ProjectSPACE program, everyone parking on street, including individuals displaying a disability placard or tags, must pay the meter. The city’s current policy allows individuals displaying a disability placard or license plates to park at meters free of charge. But officials say that’s resulted in abuse and made the placards the number one item stolen out of vehicles.
The initiative starts Thursday.
