FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — A former courthouse deputy has been sentenced to probation in connection with his wife’s suicide using his service weapon.
Fifty-year-old George Salibi entered an Alford plea to reckless endangerment Monday in Frederick County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation. An Alford plea means a defendant does not admit guilt, but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict.
Prosecutors say 44-year-old Grace Breidy Salibi shot and killed herself with her husband’s service weapon on Feb. 27, 2013. A state medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.
The News-Post of Frederick reports (http://bit.ly/1ltKfZx) that Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Kessell said in court that the charge was appropriate because Salibi left a loaded gun open in the home, even though was aware of his wife’s emotional state.
