Officer shoots man police say was armed with knife

BLADENSBURG, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County Police say an officer shot a man they say was armed with a large butcher knife.

Police say about 11:50 p.m. Sunday, a man approached a patrol officer parked in his marked cruiser on Annapolis Road. Authorities say the officer partly rolled down the window and the man spat into the cruiser.

Investigators say the officer got out of the cruiser and saw that the man had a knife. Authorities say the officer called for backup, and a responding officer deployed a stun gun on the man, with no effect.

Police say the first officer shot the man in the leg.

Authorities say 22-year-old Ivanilov Fomukong of Bladensburg was taken to a local hospital. He is charged with assault.

The officer was placed on routine administrative leave.
