BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore health officials say two cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been confirmed at a senior housing apartment building.
The Baltimore City Health Department said in a news release Friday that laboratory tests had confirmed that two residents of Apostolic Towers had contracted the disease. The department said one case was reported in March and one last week. The building has 149 units.
Officials say the two residents were hospitalized.
The health department says the building’s potable water system will be tested.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused when water tainted with a certain bacteria is inhaled into the lungs. It can lead to pneumonia.
Officials say water restrictions have been ordered at the apartments for two weeks. Residents have been urged not to shower with or drink tap water.
