Rango, police dog, receives protective vest (Video)

Tuesday - 4/1/2014, 7:02am  ET

WASHINGTON - Every police deputy should have a protective vest -- even deputies on four legs.

Frederick County Deputy Sheriff Todd Atkins' canine partner, Rango, was recently fitted with his own bullet-proof and stab-proof vest. The equipment was donated by a non-profit group called Vested Interest in K-9s.

The group recently ran a Groupon campaign soliciting donations and raised more than $335,000 to purchase protective vests for hundreds of police dogs across the country.

WTOP's David Burd has video of Rango being strapped into the vest that provides protection from bullets and stabbings.
