ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Board of Public Works has approved funding to remove up to 200,000 tires from a dump in Crownsville.

The board on Wednesday approved $2.5 million to pay for the cleanup, which will allow more than 37 acres to be placed in a conservation easement.

The board first approved the cleanup in 2003. Troubles getting permits and the deaths of the property's previous owners contributed to the delay.

The Capital of Annapolis reports ( that Maryland Environmental Service will conduct the cleanup. It is hoped the project will begin in the spring of 2015.

As many as 5 million tires may be in three ravines on the 203-acre property.
