BALTIMORE (AP) -- Tommy Hunter has a strong arm, a wicked fastball and knows what it's like to pitch with a one-run lead in the ninth inning.

Those qualities make Hunter a viable candidate to assume the closer's role for the Baltimore Orioles. The right-hander has previously experienced moderate success at the job, yet the manner in which Hunter handles failure will ultimately determine his worthiness as the last man out of the bullpen.

Hunter is vying to replace closer Jim Johnson, who was traded during the offseason. The competition opens Friday with the team's first spring training workout in Sarasota, Fla.

Hunter will compete against Darren O'Day, Ryan Webb and others. Hunter says the most important requirement of the job is not necessarily a 100 mph fastball, but the proper mindset.
