Gansler says he wouldn't spend money on youth jail

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler says he would not support spending tens of millions of dollars in state money on a Baltimore jail for youths.

Gansler, who is running in the Democratic primary for governor, said Wednesday he would support spending the money on youth services instead. He has signed a pledge not to spend the money on the jail, if he is elected governor.

Gansler says the state is putting too many youths in jail now instead of investing to provide the support young people need to stay out of jail.

Gansler says instead of spending $30 million on a jail, the state should provide more job training and better schools.
