Snow day arrives before snow for many in DC area

Tuesday - 1/21/2014, 11:20am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Many Washington offices and area schools closed before the first flake of snow fell from the sky, but there are signs that significant winter weather is moving in.

Roads in western Maryland were covered with snow early Tuesday. About 2 inches accumulated by 8 a.m. in Hagerstown, but Interstate 70 was clear.

Construction worker Tony Cockrell in Hagerstown wasn't deterred by the weather. He says if you don't work, you don't get paid.

In the Washington region, tens of thousands of government workers were given excused absences ahead of the weather. That left many seats empty on Metro trains and buses.

Regardless, Mica Hoodbhoy of Washington said she was headed to work at her federal agency. She says there's no reason to stay home, especially when it wasn't snowing yet.
