BEL AIR, Md. (AP) -- A Harford County teen has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a weapons charge in his father's death.
As part of a plea deal, 18-year-old Robert Richardson III, was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison, but avoided a life sentence.
Prosecutors said Richardson shot his shot his father, Robert Richardson Jr., in 2012 and drove to Aberdeen where he dumped the body in a pond behind a relative's house. The teen was 16 at the time, but he was charged as an adult with first- and second-degree murder.
Richardson's attorneys say if the case had gone to trial, they were prepared to argue that the teen had been abused and killed his father in self-defense.
