TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- A Baltimore police officer convicted of reckless endangerment after accidentally shooting a trainee in the head has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Forty-six-year-old William S. Kern was also ordered to undergo psychiatric counseling at sentencing Tuesday in a Baltimore County court.

Kern was convicted in October in the shooting of trainee Raymond Gray of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, police. Gray was shot in the head in February at the former Rosewood Center in Owings Mills by Kern, an instructor, during firearms training. Gray lost an eye in the accident.

Kern apologized to Gray and Gray's family, saying the shooting is something he'll have to live with for the rest of his life.

Baltimore police say Kern, a 19-year veteran, is suspended with pay.
