BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Interior Department has announced a proposed notice of sale for nearly 80,000 acres for offshore wind development about 10 miles off the coast of Ocean City.
Interior Secretary Sally Jewel joined Gov. Martin O'Malley on Tuesday in Baltimore to announce the next step in the process. The proposed notice of sale for commercial leasing triggers a 60-day comment period.
An auction could take place next year. The proposed Maryland site is the third of its kind in the nation.
O'Malley, a Democrat, pushed for legislation to create a framework to develop offshore wind that was approved in the last legislative session.
In September, there was an auction of 112,799 acres off Virginia. The first successful auction happened this summer for 164,750 acres off Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
